Department of  Wood Chemistry and Technology belonged formerly to Institute of Forest Products Utilization established in 1937. In 1961, as an independent department, the Chair of Forest Products Chemistry and Technology was founded under the head of Prof.Dr. Savni HUŞ. In 1982, by enacting a new law of Higher Education, the chairs were renamed as departments (Major Science Units).

The aim of Forest Products Chemistry and Technology Department are both the education and research in the areas of chemistry of forest products, pulp and paper technology and wood adhesives. In these areas 3 Professors, 1 Associated Professor, 1 Assistant Professor and 1 Research Assistant serve as academic staff at the department. For this purpose the following lecturs exist at the department: Forest Products Chemistry, Fiber Technology, Paper Technology, Nonwood Forest Products Chemistry, Wood Adhesives, Paper Packaging, Paper Coating. Former faculties, who worked and retired at the department are: Prof.Dr. Savni HUŞ (1939-1983), Prof.Dr. Turan TANK ((1958-200), Prof.Dr. Erol GÖKSEL (1970-1988) and Dr. Can AKKAYAN (1973-1989). Following persons worked at the department for a while and left for another faculties or institutes: Dr. Mustafa CENGİZ (1981-1989), Res.Ass. İsmail BALABAN (1984-1985), Res.Ass.Dr. Gülnur MERTOĞLU ELMAS (1993-2002), Res.Ass.Dr. Sami İMAMOĞLU (1998-2002), Res.Ass.Dr. Nural YILGÖR (1989-2004) and Res.Ass. Ali Umut ŞEN (2003-2005).
