GEOGRAPHY AND ETHNOBOTANY OF CHESTNUT LIVELIHOOD PRACTICES IN TURKEY

In Turkey, the genetic diversity of the European chestnut (Castanea sativa) and the millennia old livelihood practices which maintain it are being compromised by chestnut blight and other exotic pest outbreaks.  To be presented is an overview of an extensive catalogue of geographically specific cultural practices along with correlated blight severity measurements that our research team observed in participatory exercises with 96 households in ten sites across Turkey’s Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean Regions. Comparing results between sites and households illustrates the degree to which cultural factors may be affecting the severity of chestnut blight and maintaining genetic diversity.
